Most of us solve problems by searching through what we already know. We draw on familiar methods, advice we have heard, and experiences that worked before. That is sensible, but it also creates an invisible boundary: ideas outside our experience may never occur to us.
Overview
This affects more than creativity. It can limit where we travel, how we use our time, which opportunities we notice, and even what we believe is possible. We may dismiss an option simply because we have never seen anyone try it.
AI can help widen that field of view and explore patterns, approaches, and examples far beyond your personal experience. Used properly, it can challenge assumptions, suggest unfamiliar alternatives, and combine ideas that would not normally meet. It does not possess flawless wisdom, but it is remarkably good at putting more possibilities on the table.
Ask for Ideas Outside Your Experience
Suppose you are retired and want a worthwhile personal project. Your first thoughts might be volunteering, travelling, or taking a course. Those are perfectly reasonable, but asking AI for “retirement ideas” will probably produce the same predictable list.
A better prompt deliberately pushes beyond it:
Sample prompt: “I am a retired school administrator with strong organizational skills, limited interest in formal employment, and about ten hours a week available. Suggest eight unusual but realistic projects that would let me contribute to my community or create something useful. Avoid conventional volunteering, consulting, and part-time jobs. For each idea, explain who it would help, what I would need to learn, and how I could test it without making a major commitment.”
That might uncover possibilities such as building a local oral-history archive, helping small charities document their procedures, or creating plain-language guides to confusing public services. Some ideas will miss the mark. That is fine; even a rejected suggestion can expose a direction you had not considered.
Challenge the Way You Normally Pursue a Goal
Now consider a completely different problem: planning a family vacation when everyone has different interests. Most people begin with destinations they already know, then struggle to make those places suit the group. AI can reverse the process.
Sample prompt: “Help me design a seven-day family vacation for two adults, a teenager interested in wildlife, and a grandparent who cannot walk long distances. Instead of beginning with popular destinations, identify four types of experiences that could satisfy all three travellers. Then suggest less-obvious destinations within a four-hour flight of Vancouver, BC. Challenge my assumption that we need to stay in one hotel or visit a major city.”
This changes AI from a recommendation machine into a thinking partner. It questions the structure of the plan before filling in the details.
Put It Into Practice
Choose one goal, frustration, or decision you are currently approaching in the usual way. Tell AI what you have already considered, what you normally assume, and which limitations are genuinely fixed. Then ask for alternatives that deliberately avoid your familiar approach.
Follow up with: “Which of these ideas am I most likely to dismiss too quickly, and what would a low-risk test look like?” That question is often more useful than requesting another twenty suggestions.
Treat the results as raw material, not instructions. Check costs, facts, safety, and practical constraints yourself. AI cannot remove the walls around your thinking, but it can point out where the doors might be—and occasionally suggest that the wall was never load-bearing.
